The Moore Residence is a contemporary home that draws inspiration from Tropical Modern homes built in South Florida during the 1950’s through the 1970’s, while also referencing industrial structures along the Miami River and Seybold Canal. The house is designed for a Miami-born couple, both professionals in their fields, one an artist and the other a sailor. The program includes an art studio and guest suite on the ground level over which is the main residential floor on level 2. The location of the site is in verdant oasis along a peaceful canal only minutes away from the highest density neighborhood south of Manhattan, towards which the views of the home’s design are oriented. The home is located along the Seybold Canal within the Historic Spring Garden District. Spring Garden is one of Miami’s oldest neighborhoods that has fragments of the City’s History since its beginnings. Architecturally, the neighborhood has an eclectic mix of early Frame and Masonry Vernacular, Deco, Industrial, Mission, Bungalow, and Modern styles. For these, reasons the house couldn’t have a particular style, but rather a mix of styles embedded in its design. The home also responds to environmental aspects of the South Florida region. The design considers the potential flooding risks associated with being located along a canal and therefore is elevated 5 feet from the street level.
